I used the ghost block from my Fall mini quilt pattern and sized it up to 9” finished block.

Follow the cutting instruction below to cut all the pieces except BG19 pieces to make a 9” finished block.

From ghost fabric, cut the following:
- G1: (1) 2.5” x 3.25”
- G2: (2) 1.5” x 1.5”
- G3: (2) 1.25” x 2”
- G4: (1) 2” x 2”
- G5: (2) 2.5” x 2.5”
- G6: (1) 2.5” x 1.25”
- G7: (1) 6.5” x 4”
- G8: (1) 2.5” x 2”

From background fabric, cut the following:
- BG14: (2) 2.5” x 2.5”
- BG15: (4) 2” x 2”
- BG16: (1) 2.5” x 1.75”
- BG17: (1) 2.5” x 8”
- BG18: (1) 1.5” x 9.5”

Follow the instructions in the Fall mini quilt - Ghost Block, but omit BG19 pieces. Measure your book and add 2” to both the width and length, these will be the size for you book sleeve. For example, my book size is 8.5” x 11.5”, I have to make my block to be 10.5” x 13.5”.

To make the book sleeve (Finished size: 9.5” x 12.5”):

  • Sew (2) 1” x 9.5” side borders to both side of the ghost block. Press seams toward the borders.

  • Then sew (2) 2.5” x 10.5” to the top and bottom of the ghost block. Press seams toward the borders.

  • The block is now measures 10.5” x 13.5”.

  • Cut (1) 10.5” x 13.5” backing piece, (2) 10.5” x 13.5” lining pieces, and (2) 10.5” x 13.5” fusible fleece.

  • Fuse the exterior pieces according to the manufacturer.

  • Quilt the exterior pieces, trim off excess as needed.

  • Lay your exterior pieces right sides together, sew along 3 sides with 3/8” seam allowance, leave the top open. Press seams open. Repeat with the lining pieces.

  • With the exterior right side out, insert the the exterior piece inside the lining(wrong side out), so that the right sides are facing each other.

  • Sew along the top, and remember to leave 3” gap for turning.

  • Turn the book sleeve right side out. Press and top stitch.

Tada! You’ve just finished your quilted book sleeve. Protect your favorite books and carry them in style wherever you go. It’s also a great gift idea for any book lovers in your life.
