Elevate Your Holidays with a Handmade Oversized Bow
Create a Bold Holiday Statement with a DIY Fabric Bow
There’s something magical about decorating for the holidays, isn’t there? A wreath on your door welcomes family, friends, and all the holiday cheer into your home. Want to take yours up a notch? A jumbo fabric bow is the perfect finishing touch! It’s simple to make, customizable, and adds that warm, handmade charm we all love. Or, skip the wreath altogether and hang the bow on its own for a bold, festive statement!
What You’ll Need
Fabric: 1 yard of extra wide fabric, mine is Gingham Hearts Wovens, 55” wide. (If you use 42” wide, you will have to piece 2 strips together, or make your tails a bit shorter)
Cutting: Body - (1) 18” x 37”, Tails: (16” x 47”), Center tab: 2.5” x 6” (I changed my mind later and made it bigger, 7” x 6”)Sewing machine
Basic sewing supplies
Hera Marker
Point Turner
Cotton batting/Interfacing (optional, for extra structure) : 8” x 36.5”
Make the tails
Fold each tail in half lengthwise, then fold it in half widthwise so the two short edges line up on top of each other.
Using your ruler, line up the 45-degree angle with the long edges. Mark with a Hera marker and cut ¼" away from the line to create the angled tail ends.
Sew along the raw edges, leaving a 3.5" gap in the center for turning.
Turn the tails right side out, carefully push out the corners with a point turner.
Press and topstitch along the edges
Make the body
Fold the body piece in half lengthwise with the right sides together. (Optional: If using fusible fleece, place it in the middle like a sandwich before sewing the long edges together)
Sew along the open edge with a ¼" seam allowance, leaving the ends open.
Turn right side out and press.
Optional: If you want it to be fluffy, slide the cotton batting inside the tube before sewing the short edges closed.
Fold the strip in half, and sew the raw edges together. Press the seam open. (It should now look like a loop)
Turn the piece so that the seams face the inside of the loop.
Mark the center, and gather the fabric to form a bow shape.
Secure the gathering with string or twine.
Assemble the bow
Mark the center and gather the tail piece to form a pleated look.
Secure it with string or twine to the bottom of the body.
To make a center tab: Fold the strip in half lengthwise to create a crease. Open it up, then fold the raw edges in to line up with the center crease. Fold the strip again so that all the raw edges are hidden. Press and topstitch along the edges to secure.
Wrap the center tab around the center of your bow. This ties everything together—literally! Hot glue it at the back to secure it.
That’s it! You’ve just created a stunning, jumbo fabric bow that’s sure to steal the show on your holiday wreath. This was such a fun and quick project, and the best part? You can change up the fabric to match any season or style.
